Why Join?  A Personal Perspective

I am thinking about the many things I'm passionate about and the organizations that I am committed to. I am passionate about diversity and inclusion. As an advocate and community activist, I am always ensuring that these practices are front and center. There are many who want to group them as one and the same, but they are not. Until all organizations and institutions adhere to and respect diversity and inclusion practices, they will remain a step behind, falling short of encompassing who and what they are representing. They will fail to reach the very people that should be involved.

As a Black Woman with Chronic Illness, I'm going to always push the envelope. I have been a part of many things where "diversity" mattered, yet there were no methods or practices that made me feel included. Different elements of people (ethnicity, cultural and socially diverse backgrounds) must have a seat at the table. Once the seat is filled, they have to be included. Real change occurs when one feels like they are effecting it. It is pivotal that one believes what one has to offer is needed and appreciated. People must be embraced and respected for their experiences.

The NAACP, Branch 2260 is working hard to serve, uplift and transform our community on all levels. Time is valuable and true dedication is transformational. With chronic illness, time becomes a commodity that I cannot waste. (Teresa Wright-Johnson, Health and Wellness Chair)
